A dead mule lies beside an artillery caisson, the detail that gives this view its blunt title, *Unfit for Service*. The picture is a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required photographers to coat, expose, and develop each plate within minutes, often in the field. Gettysburg was fought July 1-3, 1863, and photographers who visited the ground in the weeks afterward recorded the abandoned equipment and dead animals that littered the fields and roads. The negative's sleeve gives the date as July 1862, which conflicts with the battle's date. The library also notes that the attribution to Alexander Gardner, whose team documented the battlefield, is a former one.
