Rose Woods, at the southwestern edge of the fighting near the Wheatfield, is where this scene was made, and the bodies gathered there belong to Confederate soldiers awaiting burial on July 5, 1863, several days after the battle in that spot ended. The card was published by Mumper & Co. of Gettysburg, a local firm that sold stereographs to visitors who wanted views of the battlefield. The original caption placed the scene on Culp's Hill, an error later corrected by historian William A. Frassanito, whose research fixed the location. Burial work across the battlefield continued for months, and images like this show how long the dead lay exposed before they were properly laid to rest.
