Unlike many Gettysburg views of the town and the ridges, this stereograph shows the dead of the Wheat Field, a few acres of grain where Union and Confederate troops fought on July 2, 1863, the second day of the battle. The card is numbered 245 in a photographic war history series, and its two halves were meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave viewers a sense of depth in the scene. Battlefield photographs like this were made within days of the fighting and were sold to a public eager to see the war's aftermath. Its caption is brief, so the exact photographer and vantage point are not recorded here.
