The subject is a farmhouse belonging to a man named G.J. White, photographed in the countryside near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, in 1863. The image was made from a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required the photographer to coat and expose each plate before it dried, which made field work slow and demanding. Gettysburg was the site of the large battle in early July 1863, and the surrounding farms and homes were left in the middle of the fighting and its aftermath. Pictures like this one show the ordinary dwellings of the region that were caught up in the war, a quieter counterpart to the battlefield views taken there that year.
