Drawn from a vantage point inside the Confederate line, this view looks back toward the Union position, with Ziegler's Grove on the left and a clump of trees on the right. It shows the open ground that Pickett's men crossed on the afternoon of July 3, 1863, as Confederate infantry advanced under artillery and rifle fire toward Cemetery Ridge. Edwin Forbes, a Union artist who followed the Army of the Potomac and recorded its camps and battlefields, made the work in the years after the war, when artists often reconstructed battle scenes from field sketches and memory.
