Drawn in pencil and Chinese white on brown paper and dated July 2, 1863, this sheet is titled for Confederate Lt. Gen. James Longstreet's attack on the left center of the Union line, with the Blue Ridge rising in the distance. That afternoon Longstreet's divisions struck the Union positions south of Gettysburg, where fighting swirled through the Peach Orchard, the Wheatfield and Devil's Den. The pale white highlights on the brown ground give the smoke and massed troops a loose, sketched quality, and the work offers a rare view of a battle drawn on the day it was fought.
