Rather than the fighting itself, this drawing shows a column of Confederate prisoners from Gen. James Longstreet's corps being marched to the rear under Union guard on July 3, 1863, the third day of the battle at Gettysburg. Longstreet's men had spent that afternoon in the assault on the Union center, and many of them were taken prisoner in the fighting. The sketch is part of a Civil War drawing collection given to the Library of Congress by J. P. Morgan in 1919, and it records the aftermath of the battle: the long walk of defeated soldiers away from the field.
