Drawn in pencil and Chinese white on brown paper, this sheet shows Confederate Gen. James Longstreet's assault on the left center of the Union line on July 2, 1863, with the Blue Ridge faintly visible in the distance. Longstreet's First Corps attacked around the Peach Orchard and Wheatfield, and the fighting there was among the bloodiest of the battle's second day. The white heightening sets off troops, flags and smoke against the darker paper, a technique suited to quick battlefield studies. The sheet is a useful record of how the fighting looked to an observer on the field, and of the ground that the next day's assault would cross.
