This wood engraving shows Confederate Gen. James Longstreet's attack on the Union left and center on July 2, 1863, the second day of the battle at Gettysburg, with the Blue Ridge visible on the horizon. Alfred R. Waud, a staff artist who worked in the field for *Harper's Weekly*, made the drawing, and the engraving ran in the August 8, 1863, issue. Because the sketch passed through a wood engraver's hands before printing, the scene reflects the conventions of wartime illustration as much as the field itself. It is a useful view of how the Northern public was shown the battle while the war was still being fought.
