Few of the Gettysburg sheets in this collection were drawn as the fighting was still going on, and this one carries its own timestamp in the title: "last Rebel shot." Alfred R. Waud, a staff artist for Harper's Weekly, sketched the battlefield in pencil and white lead on green paper, and the inscription tells us he meant it as a view of the hills across from the Union line, where Confederate guns had been firing. Waud worked close to the troops and sent his drawings to engravers in New York, so pictures like this one gave readers at home some of the first visual sense of the battle's ground and its cost.
