A view across the hills to the left of a Union position, the sketch is titled as the last shot fired by Confederate artillery, which suggests it records a lull after the cannonade. Alfred R. Waud, an artist who followed the Army of the Potomac for *Harper's Weekly*, drew it in pencil and white lead on green paper, a combination that let engravers pick out highlights. It is dated sometime between July 1 and 3, 1863, the three days of fighting around Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, when the armies struggled over the town's roads and ridges.
