The title, written in the lower right corner, names the 9th Massachusetts Battery under Bigelow, a light artillery unit whose guns were moving into line at Gettysburg. The sketch is in pencil on a small sheet of yellow paper, a quick field-style record of men and horses working a gun into position rather than a finished composition. The battle lasted three days, July 1 to 3, 1863, and the artillery was often what held the Union line when infantry was pressed hardest. Drawings like this one, made close to the events they show, are valuable because they capture the movement and urgency of the moment.
