Few battlefield sketches from Gettysburg record the wreckage left behind as faithfully as this one, which shows artillery pieces being pulled back from the ground near the cemetery on the battle's later days. The drawing is done in pencil with watercolor on tan paper, and its title, inscribed on the reverse, places the scene in the chaotic movement of guns and men during the fighting of July 1 through 3, 1863. Such sketches were made by artists who followed the armies, and they show the strain on the batteries: disabled guns had to be hauled off the field to keep them from falling into enemy hands, and the work of removing them was slow and dangerous under fire. The sheet is part of the Library of Congress's Civil War drawing collection, a gift from J.P. Morgan in 1919.
