The gatehouse at the entrance to the new national cemetery at Gettysburg appears here as a stereograph, two nearly identical views meant to be seen together through a stereoscope for a sense of depth. The cemetery was laid out in 1863 to rebury Union soldiers killed in the battle fought July 1 through 3, and its dedication that November was the occasion for Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. Views of the town and battlefield sold widely in the months after the fighting, and this one was once credited to Alexander Gardner, though that attribution is now uncertain.
