Few moments at Gettysburg are as widely remembered as the advance Confederate troops made across open fields toward the Union center at the grove of trees on Cemetery Ridge, about 3 p.m. on July 3, 1863. Edwin Forbes, who served with the Union army as a sketch artist, drew and painted scenes of the war from field sketches and memory, and this view depicts that assault. The reverse bears a stamp from George Rowney & Co., a London maker of artists' materials, which suggests the sheet was produced with British supplies.
