Little Round Top, the rocky hill that anchored the Union left at Gettysburg, is seen here in the last light of July 3, 1863, after the day's heavy fighting had ended. Edwin Forbes, a Union artist who followed the Army of the Potomac with a sketchbook, based scenes like this on field studies, and his finished works were often made later, after the war. The cannons on the summit are a reminder of how much artillery had been hauled up the slopes to hold the ground. The quiet evening sky makes a sharp contrast with the cannonade that had filled the afternoon.
