Rain is the detail that sets this scene apart, showing Union troops slogging along a road near Emmitsburg, Maryland, as they pursued Robert E. Lee's army after the Battle of Gettysburg. By early July 1863, Lee's forces were withdrawing toward the Potomac River, and the pursuit through the Maryland countryside was slow, muddy work for men on foot and for wagons and artillery. Edwin Forbes, a Union artist who followed the army and sketched its campaigns for illustrated newspapers, recorded scenes like this one, which show the everyday hardships behind the war's larger movements.
