Few scenes from the days after Gettysburg convey the mud of the retreat as directly as this one, which shows Union troops on a road near Emmitsburg, Maryland, during the pursuit of Robert E. Lee's army. After Lee withdrew south from the battlefield in early July 1863, heavy rain turned the roads into deep mire that slowed wagons and foot soldiers alike. Edwin Forbes, who covered the war as an artist for Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, recorded such marches in field sketches that were often later developed into finished pictures, and this scene captures the weary, soaked columns following Lee toward the Potomac.
