This drawing shows the Confederate assault on the earthworks atop Culps Hill at about 7:30 in the evening of July 2, 1863, the second day at Gettysburg. The Union line there was held by Wadsworth's division of the 1st Corps and part of the 12th Corps under General Slocum, who had dug in on the hill's slopes earlier that day. Edwin Forbes, a Union artist who sketched troop movements and battlefield scenes during the war, made the work. The drawing was produced later, between 1865 and 1895, and it reflects his effort to record the fighting in detail. It is a useful view of the fight for Culps Hill, which continued after dark and ended with the Union holding its position.
