The breastworks on Culps Hill, the wooded rise south of Gettysburg, are the setting here, shown as the hill looked on the morning of July 3. The title gives the year as 1862, but the fighting there took place in July 1863, when Union troops of the XII Corps held the hill's earthworks against Confederate attacks that began before dawn on July 3. The picture was made sometime between 1865 and 1895, years after the battle, so it reflects how the ground was remembered rather than a view sketched on the spot. It came to the Library of Congress as a gift from J. P. Morgan in 1919.
