Behind the breastworks of Culps Hill, the Union defenders faced a dawn attack on July 3, 1863, the last day of the Gettysburg battle. The record's title gives the year as 1862, but the fighting there took place in 1863, so the date is likely a slip. The hill's earthen and stone defenses had been held overnight by Union troops of the Twelfth Corps, who spent several hours that morning driving back Confederate assaults. The work was made after the war, between 1865 and 1895, and came to the Library of Congress as a gift from J.P. Morgan in 1919.
