Few moments at Gettysburg were more fiercely contested than the afternoon of July 2, 1863, when Confederate forces under James Longstreet struck the Union Third Corps along the Emmitsburg Road and in the fields around the Peach Orchard and Wheatfield. This plan traces the concentrated Confederate assault that fell on a line Maj. Gen. Daniel Sickles had pushed forward of the main ridge, leaving his corps badly exposed. The ground was broken by fences, orchards, and boulder-strewn slopes, and the map's markings show how the fighting surged back and forth across it. Reading the notations closely shows how quickly the day's battle lines shifted.
