Hagerstown, Maryland, sets this scene apart. The town lay on the road Robert E. Lee's army took in July 1863 as it withdrew from Gettysburg toward the Potomac River, and the fighting there was largely rearguard action. Edwin Forbes, a Union artist who had sketched armies in the field, later produced finished scenes like this one, made decades after the war, when veterans and publishers were eager for images of the campaign. The verso carries a Winsor & Newton stamp, the mark of the London firm that supplied artists' materials, which suggests the sheet was sold to an artist for finished work.
