The grove of trees on Cemetery Ridge marks the point where Pickett's Charge struck the Union center around 3 p.m. on July 3, 1863, the climax of the battle's third day. Edwin Forbes, a Union artist who sketched on the Gettysburg field, is credited with the original scene. The stamp on the back reads "Manufactured by George Rowney & Co.," a London maker of artists' materials, which suggests the sheet passed through an English supplier. Its date range of 1865 to 1895 places it decades after the fighting, when Civil War battle scenes were widely reproduced.
