The Library of Congress print shows Devil's Den, the jumble of boulders and rocky ledges on the southern edge of the Gettysburg battlefield, as it looked during the fighting on July 2, 1863. Its viewpoint faces toward the Confederate lines, which lets the viewer see the ground the attackers had to cross. The engraving appeared in volume 3 of *Battles and Leaders of the Civil War*, published by the Century Company in 1887 and 1888. That series paired illustrations with firsthand accounts from veterans of both armies, and many of its battle scenes were drawn from sketches made near the time of the events.
