Devil's Den is a jumble of granite boulders on the southern end of the Gettysburg battlefield, and this view shows the rock outcrops with a winding path threading between them and trees rising from the gaps. The site became a fierce fight on the second day of the battle, July 2, 1863, when Confederate troops attacked Union sharpshooters posted among the rocks and fighting raged hand to hand for control of the ground. Today the boulders and paths look quieter, but they are worth noticing as the place where the terrain itself shaped the struggle.
