Devil's Den is the jumble of huge granite boulders on the southern end of the Gettysburg battlefield, and this view shows the rocky ridge as a long, wide sweep rather than a single close-up. The outcropping became a fierce fighting ground on July 2, 1863, when Confederate sharpshooters and infantry clashed with Union troops who had climbed into the rocks to hold the line. Because the boulders offered cover on both sides, the fight there was often hand to hand, and the stones still bear the marks of that struggle. Panoramic views like this one were popular with visitors who wanted to see the scale of the ground for themselves.
