A wide panoramic view of rows of canvas tents stretches across the frame near Gettysburg, showing how much of the landscape a single encampment could fill. Camps like this were a familiar sight in the area, from the Union and Confederate armies that occupied the fields in 1863 to the veterans' gatherings held there in later decades. The 1913 reunion of Union and Confederate veterans, which housed thousands in a temporary tent city, is one well-known example. Panoramic prints of such scenes were popular because they let viewers take in the full scale of the camp at once.
