A panoramic view of a college lawn, taken in 1913, shows a campus that had not yet been reshaped by the building booms of the following decades. Gettysburg in those years was known mainly for its schools and its battlefield, and the sepia tone typical of early twentieth-century prints gives the grass, walkways and surrounding trees a soft, slightly faded look. Panoramic cameras of the era captured wide sweeps of a scene in one exposure, so the image shows how the grounds were laid out and used by students and staff at a time when campus life moved at a slower pace.
