Pennsylvania College in Gettysburg, the institution that became Gettysburg College, dates back to 1832 and was a Lutheran-affiliated school in the years this 1909 view shows. The campus sat on the western edge of town, a short walk from the fields where the Union and Confederate armies fought in July 1863, so the college grounds carry the same history as the battlefield just beyond them. Photographs from this period often show the early brick academic buildings set among open lawns and young trees, a reminder of how the town looked before the battlefield became a national park.
