Panoramic views of Gettysburg were among the most popular souvenirs of the battlefield in the early twentieth century, and this 1909 image shows the landscape as visitors of that era would have seen it. The date falls at a turning point: the battle was fought in July 1863, and by 1909 the field had been partly marked with monuments and was being shaped into a national military park. Pictures like this one document how the ground looked during that transition, when the fields that once held the armies were also becoming a place of commemoration. Its wide format is worth noticing, since it was meant to convey the sweep of the terrain on which the three-day battle unfolded.
