Here the camera turns to the rail line that ran through the Gettysburg field, the Pennsylvania Railroad, rather than to the monuments or the ridges that draw most visitors. The railroad mattered in the battle's story: the Union army's supply and troop movements depended on lines like it, and the town grew up around the rail traffic that brought soldiers and wounded in and out after July 1863. Pictures of the battlefield made around this period often show how quickly the landscape of farm fields, fences, and stone walls was being reshaped by roads, tracks, and the memorial builders who followed. Looking at it now, the view is a useful reminder that the famous ground was also working countryside.
