The record places this glass negative at the 1863 dedication of the Gettysburg battlefield, where a large crowd gathered in November to honor the Union dead. That ceremony, held on November 19 at the new soldiers' cemetery, is best known for Abraham Lincoln's brief address. The plate is a wet collodion stereograph negative, a process that required photographers to coat, expose, and develop each plate in a short window. For years the image was credited to Alexander Gardner, though that attribution is now uncertain. The caption calls the scene a monument dedication, so the exact occasion is worth checking against other views from that day.
