The Pennsylvania Railroad line is what sets this view apart from the other Gettysburg scenes on the board, placing the 1913 battlefield against a working rail corridor rather than a monument or field. The photograph dates from the fiftieth anniversary of the battle, when the town and the surrounding fields were drawing large crowds of veterans and visitors. By then the railroad had long been the main way travelers reached the town, and its tracks ran close to the ground where the fighting had raged in July 1863. Look for how the landscape has been reshaped into farmland and rail infrastructure, a reminder of how quickly a site of war had become a place of commerce and memory.
