Set among the boulders and scattered trees of a rocky hillside, this glass-plate photograph shows a landscape that belongs to the Gettysburg battlefield's wider terrain rather than to any single monument or building. Glass-plate negatives were the standard medium for landscape work in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and photographers who recorded Gettysburg often turned their cameras to its stony ridges and open fields, which had become places of pilgrimage for veterans and visitors. The rugged ground pictured here helps explain why the hills were so hard to hold and so hard to cross during the fighting in July 1863. Notice how the sparse trees and broken rock give a sense of the terrain as it looked to the veterans who came back to walk it.
