Few details in this view point to the battle. A stone farmhouse sits behind a wooden fence and a climbing trellis, the kind of settled farm scene that was common across the countryside around Gettysburg. Many farms there were built of local fieldstone, and a number of them were drawn into the fighting of July 1863, when houses and barns were used as shelter and field hospitals. Glass-plate negatives like this one were the standard way to record such scenes in the decades afterward, when photographers documented both the battlefield and the working landscape that surrounded it. The trellis and fence are worth a closer look, since they show how these farms were kept up as the region became known for its war memorials.
