Soldiers and officers crowd together in front of a stone gateway, a setting that places the scene in or near Gettysburg, where large gatherings of Union troops and visitors followed the battle fought there in July 1863. The board is named for the Gettysburg Address, delivered at the dedication of the Soldiers' National Cemetery that November, when thousands of people came to the town. The record does not identify the gateway or the exact occasion, so the picture is best read as a document of the commemorations that followed the battle, when veterans often gathered at the battlefield.
