Rather than centering on one town, this map takes in three states at once: Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania, the border country where the eastern armies moved in the summer of 1863. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia crossed the Potomac and marched north through Maryland into south-central Pennsylvania, while Union forces moved on parallel roads to keep pace. A regional view like this one showed how those routes ran together and why the campaign converged on Gettysburg in early July. Maps of this kind helped commanders plan marches and helped readers at home follow the news.
