Its bronze figure stands with a rifle held ready, the kind of infantryman who appears again and again among the monuments across the Gettysburg battlefield. Sunset light warms the metal and sharpens the outline of the soldier against the sky. Many of those memorials were raised by veterans' groups and state commissions in the decades after the 1863 battle, when survivors wanted their units honored on the ground where they had fought. It is worth noticing how often the plain foot soldier, rather than a commanding general, was chosen as the figure to represent the war.
