A bronze rider raised on a granite base is one of the most recognizable sights on the Gettysburg battlefield, and trees framing this one soften the formal setting. Most of the equestrian figures there honor Union and Confederate generals and were paid for by state governments, regimental associations and veterans in the decades after the 1863 battle. Congress established the battlefield as a national military park in 1895, and the monuments that followed turned the fields into a landscape of commemoration. Look closely at the horse's pose and the pedestal, since sculptors used these to signal an officer's rank and temperament.
