The rocky ridge and the bronze soldier standing above it give this view its character: a hand-colored photograph of the kind sold as a souvenir to visitors who came to walk the battlefield. On July 2, 1863, fighting raged across the boulders of Devil's Den, the Wheatfield, and the slopes of Little Round Top, where Union and Confederate troops struggled for control of the southern end of the Union line. Veterans and state commissions erected many monuments on these hills in the decades after the war, so statues like this one recall the men who fought there. The added color, applied by hand over a black-and-white print, was popular in the late 1800s and early 1900s, when it made these scenes of memory look more vivid.
