A bearded man sits on the rocks with a sketchbook on his knee, a pose that suggests the photographer arranged him for the camera. The card is grouped with Gettysburg views from July 3, the third day of the battle, which ended with Pickett's Charge against the Union center on Cemetery Ridge. Photographers who worked the field in the weeks after the fighting often placed people among the boulders to give the landscape a human scale, and the stereo format made those scenes appear to stand out in depth when viewed through a stereoscope. The sitter is not named.
