Few places in America have drawn more photographers than Gettysburg, but this panoramic view stands out for showing the battlefield town not as a battle site but as a gathering place. In 1913, the fiftieth anniversary of the battle brought tens of thousands of Union and Confederate veterans to the town, and they were housed in large tent encampments set up on the fields and in the surrounding countryside. Panoramas like this one let viewers take in the sheer scale of the canvas city, with rows of tents stretching across the ground. The reunion was one of the largest gatherings of Civil War veterans ever held, and images such as this record how the town was reshaped for a few summer weeks.
