McPherson's Woods, on the west side of the Chambersburg Pike outside Gettysburg, became a fighting ground on July 1, 1863, when Union and Confederate troops clashed there. This stereograph is catalogued with a date of 1861, two years earlier, so it likely shows the grove before the armies arrived. Its two wet collodion glass plates were made as a pair, so viewers could see the trees and road in depth through a stereoscope. The record notes that the work was once attributed to Alexander Gardner.
