Robert E. Lee, commander of the Army of Northern Virginia, is the figure in this engraved portrait, and the printed name beneath the image marks it as a reproduction meant to be recognized and bought as a likeness of him. Lee's reputation as a gentleman soldier was built in part through images like this one, which circulated widely in the decades after the Civil War. Engravings such as this one were a common way for Americans to own a picture of a famous general, and the Gettysburg setting on the board reflects Lee's role in the campaign of 1863 that ended there. Look closely at the lettering and the line work, which show how engravers rendered faces before photographic reproduction became routine.
