Robert E. Lee sits for this engraving as a general in Confederate gray, a portrait made in the years just after the Civil War when his face was becoming one of the most reproduced images in the country. The print is credited to A. Robin, an engraver whose name appears on the plate and whose work reflects the mid-nineteenth-century habit of translating photographs and paintings into finely cut lines that could be printed in bulk. Lee, who had commanded the Army of Northern Virginia, died in 1870, and the years bracketing this print saw his reputation shift from wartime adversary to a figure of reconciliation and enduring Southern memory.
