Lee's headquarters in Gettysburg was a place where Confederate command decisions were made during the battle of July 1863, and this stereograph records it as a site of that moment rather than as a battlefield scene. The card was made and sold by W.H. Tipton & Co., a Gettysburg studio that photographed the town and its surroundings for visitors in the decades after the fighting. Stereo views like this one were meant to be seen through a stereoscope, which gave the flat image depth and made distant sites feel present. Its date range, between 1863 and 1890, suggests it was made during the period when the battlefield was becoming a destination for tourists and veterans.
