Dated September 17 in its record, this print shows Robert E. Lee, the Confederate general whose Army of Northern Virginia fought the Union army at Gettysburg in July 1863. The catalog data is unverified, and the notes tie the print to the firm Shober & Carqueville and a U.S. Copyright Office entry, so the c1891 date more likely reflects when the image was registered than when the portrait was made. By then Lee had been dead for about two decades, and portraits like this one circulated widely as Americans in both North and South revisited the war and its commanders.
