Dated to December 13, 1862, this color lithograph places Robert E. Lee at Fredericksburg, Virginia, on the day Union forces under Ambrose Burnside attacked Confederate lines on the heights above the town. The assaults failed with heavy losses, and the battle is remembered as one of the most lopsided Union defeats of the war, with Lee's men holding strong positions behind a stone wall at the base of Marye's Heights. Printed around 1900, long after the fighting ended, the picture reflects how Lee had become a heroic figure in popular memory, and H.A. Ogden's design and the Jones Brothers Publishing Co. imprint show how such images were produced for a broad commercial audience.
