Confederate cavalry commander J.E.B. Stuart is the focus of this picture, which shows his June 1862 ride around the Union army of George B. McClellan during the Peninsula Campaign near Richmond. Over four days in mid-June, Stuart led about 1,200 horsemen completely around the Army of the Potomac, capturing prisoners and horses and gathering intelligence on its flank. The raid embarrassed McClellan and boosted Confederate morale, and it made Stuart a celebrated figure in the South. This color print, issued around 1900 by Jones Bros. Publishing Company from an illustration by H.A. Ogden, reflects the lasting popular interest in Civil War cavalry exploits.
